Elina Hypponen

Elina Hyppönen is Professor in Nutritional and Genetic Epidemiology at the University of South Australia, and Principal Research Fellow at the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute, Adelaide. She is also an Adjunct Professor in Epidemiology at the University of Tampere in her native Finland, and holds an appointment as a Honorary Professor at the University College London, UK where she was based for 12 years prior to relocating to Australia. She currently heads the Centre for Population Health Research, a flagship University of South Australia research concentration. Elina has an interdisciplinary background, with academic qualifications in epidemiology, medical statistics, nutrition and public health. She has authored more than 130 high-profile refereed publications and several book chapters (H-index 53). She is best known for her work on vitamin D, with a strong research background also in the fields of intergenerational and life-course epidemiology and in establishing genetic and environmental influences on growth and disease risk. Much of her research is done in the context of large international consortia, with recent work focusing on using genetic methods in evaluating causal effects and in establishing how we can optimise lifestyle recommendations to overcome genetic vulnerabilities affecting health and disease risk.
