Andrew Symons

Andrew Symons is a vitreoretinal surgeon and Head of Ophthalmology at The Royal Melbourne Hospital. He obtained a PhD for work in genetics done at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute. He trained in ophthalmology at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital and underwent his clinical and postdoctoral fellowship training at the Wilmer Eye Institute of The Johns Hopkins University. As a vitreoretinal surgeon Andrew is heavily involved in treatment of diabetic retinopathy at all levels of severity. He has multiple research interests relevant to diabetic retinopathy. He was an investigator the the READ2 and READ3 studies of ranibizumab in diabetic macular oedema and is currently a principal investigator in a study of diabetic retinopathy in pregnancy. He has done basic scientific work in the genetics of retinal vascular regeneration in the mouse. He advises in adaptive optics imaging studies of the retinal vasculature in diabetic retinopathy.
